Laptop

My DS2 needs a new laptop for college work.

No special programs need to be added to it (he is doing Art and will use the computers at college for any assignments which have dedicated programs that are needed) so usage will be (normal) college work only (non gaming as he uses a console for that).

HP 15-fc0008na Laptop - 15.6in FHD, AMD Ryzen 5, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, with Optional Microsoft 365 Family (12 Months) - Silver | very.co.uk

Am also looking at this:

HP 15s-fq2016na Laptop - Core™ i5, Silver - HP Store UK

HP 15s-fq2016na Laptop - Core™ i5, Silver

It doesn't have to be a HP if anyone has any suggestions for alternatives (I just included them as HP seem to have an offer on for students presently)?

As there are more knowledgeable people than me on the forum, I thought I would ask people’s opinions?

TIA

With those other computers doing the heavy lifting what about a chromebook?

Does it have to be new? Thousands of plenty good enough secondhand laptops out there for general use

    This is mse after all.......
  • I agree with cerebus. There is no need to purchase a new computer for any '(normal) college work'.
A very old, second hand, notebook/laptop capable of running Windows Vista, (yes over fifteen years old), will adequately handle everything they require of it. If it is a branded computer, just removing all of the pre-installed bloatware, and not installing antivirus/antimalware or cleanup type software, (they are all unnecessary) is all that is required. There are a whole host of online software products which will handle all coursework, and excellent free and open source products available for any artwork to be done off campus, (Krita, Inkscape, Blender etc.).

Just about any laptop will do the job.

This Acer Aspire is a good buy and there are dozens of similar machines out there.

But a chromebook is half the weight and half the price.
  • Hi All

apologies for resurrecting an old thread of mine, but I am looking at:

ASUS VivoBook 15 Laptop, Intel Core i5 Processor, 8GB RAM, 512GB SSD, 15.6" Full HD, Black (johnlewis.com)

    it is 11th Gen

    Same item but refurbed

    ASUS VivoBook 15 X1500EA 15.6" Laptop - Intel Core i5 - 512GB - REFURB-B | eBay

My son wants it in black and my ex wants it new ideally (god alone knows why when refurbed is cheaper) and would like him to have HP (I myself have an Asus) but she doesn't like them for some unknown (to me) reason

So, my query to those more knowledgeable than me, is what are the pro's and con's with this model, or should I be looking at something else, have never really researched chromebooks so can't speculate on them as to whether they are better (or not)

    TIA

Me being me would be telling my ex if she wants it new and a hp model then she better splash the cash cause I won't be

Everybody has their fav brands but in reality they are all very similar in build quality if running windows it comes down to cost , screen resolution/quality, amount and speed of ram, processor and speed of it and ssd/m.2 hard drive (m.2 is better as its quicker but how many people would actually notice the difference between the two in general day to day use)

In your case that asus model is more than adequate for your needs
