Exchanged - when to sort broadband?

Hi,

This is maybe a silly question but I've just exchanged on a property and am due to complete next week. Can I take out a new broadband deal now for my new house or will taking out a new line of credit jeopardise my mortgage funds being released? Should I wait until completion to apply for broadband?

I can't transfer over an existing broadband package as I'm currently living with my parents so don't have anything in my name.

  • You have to rely on the sellers have given their one month's notice or a home move service. Best check with them first.

When I last moved house I left it until I was in the actual house to sort broadband. In the meantime I used a cheap mobile phone company to provide internet - a sample price is £20 for 200GB, and my mobile phone sharing its internet for other devices. I can't remember for sure, but I think it took about a week or two for proper broadband to be installed, including having a hole drilled in the house (with the landlord's permission).

When I next move, I'll probably do similar. Even moving to a rented house there is too much stuff to do and things that can be left until later will be left until later. For a purchased house, even more so.

But, that's just me. Others may want full speed unrestricted internet from day 1.

If its for full fibre you may we'll need a longer lead time
  • Definitely don't arrange for it to be installed before completion day.  If you get your broadband sorted out before completion, it will mean your seller's will lose theirs and that is likely to p them off.
  • Thanks guys, the property is empty (seller has already moved out) but I think I'll wait until completion to sort my broadband.
  • You can book it but don't fix a date before completion.  After moving in you will NEED broadband and it's very frustrating to have to wait!

Maybe speak to your parents BB supplier - tell them the situation and see what they can do. I'd expect they'd be happy to arrange an appointment for after completion date. Saves you waiting any longer than necessary.

It all depends on Openreach unless another provider like Virgin/HCC/City fibre

I went with BT, and as there was no fibre available at my new house, I had the equipment sent to my old rented property and asked them to switch the broadband on the day I moved in. It went live at 3am and I just plugged the router in when I got there. Took five minutes to get it up and running,
