Well I was going to suggest that you use MiniTools Partition Wizard to easilly convert FAT to NTFS without losing the data already on the drive.

But it seems that it's now a bit late for that as you had to fully reformat anyway.

All done. Took quite a while. External hard drive now seems all OK and sync completed successfully.

with the dirty bit set on the drive a conversion would have been at risky as you do not know what is wrong with the file structure

the safest way is to reformat the drive completely
