Can anyone help me with new Sony headphones?

Got some Sony WH-XB910N. Anyone know if/how I can use them just in noise cancelling mode without Bluetooth turned on and it constantly trying to pair with something? I would like to use them for quiet reading.

The manuals are not a great deal of help for this activity.

However if Bluetooth is off then there ought to be no searching. 

When the phones are on ( bluetooth normally is on), noise cancelling can be used but Bluetooth is automatically off if you use the supplied audio cable.

You might wish to try that and if it works purchase an identical jack to plug I to the headset ( so no cable to dangle !) and see if that then also switches B/Tooth off.
