Have you turned your heating on?

  • Strange options. We haven’t turned the heating on yet and it’s nothing to do with cost. It’s too warm and our reasons are more to do with using less energy, not saving money.

Am really surprised people still put heating on and off.  I have thermostats on all my radiators so never have to put it on or turn it off.  Radiators are on just now as it’s cold and wet and temp indoors has gone under 18 degrees . I stay in one of the coldest most beautiful parts of Scotland, the coal fire will be light tonight.
We used to leave it on all the time based on thermostat (room temperature) but then we found that even if the room temperature dropped to the preset level, and the heating kicked in, if the ambient temperature was warm enoughwe felt too hot. It’s a bit like switching on a fan in summer: fans don’t lower the room temperature, they make you feel colder because of how moisture on your skin reacts to displaced air. When it got colder and our heating came on the reverse was true. The warmer radiators was making us feel (too) hot even if the room temperature was cold enough for the heating to come on.

So now we switch it off completely in summer, as generally its much warmer, until it really is cold (mid to late autumn). And only then will we let the ‘stat control the temperature!
  • Have not put the heating on yet (in Scotland) as it just doesn't feel cold enough for it yet. And even if it does get a bit chilly I'll just stick on a hoodie and do some star-jumps :)
  • Mine hasn't been on yet even with my Mum staying at the moment from Australia. If she isn't feeling the cold then it's staying off. :)

On the basis that the outside temperature has just managed to rise to 7 degrees and been chucking it down all day what do you think !

As others have said - you need a thermostat option. I never turn the heating off separately, I just leave it to the thermostat.
Actually what you really need is a "what have you set your thermostat at?"

We finally put the heating on for the first time yesterday. Only for a couple of hours though - we are trying to be careful. Our gas bill was ridiculous last year, we are hoping for a more affordable winter this time round.
