Can I divert screen content from one Android phone to another?

My problem is a badly damaged screen on an old phone (I actually trod on it!), but I know the touch capability is still intact, although I'm only seeing a mass of odd colours. I'd like to operate the touchscreen by using a secondary output on a another Android phone, which will show me where the buttons and links are located. I can't get it to connect by Bluetooth obviously, so would two charge cables connected by one of these be appropriate, please? Phone is Android 7 (Nougat).

If i connect my phone with a usb cable to a monitor, the phone display comes up on the monitor, might that work?
I'm not sure you can connect a phone in the same way.1 -

Can I use a laptop screen? I've connected it before but all it does is charge.0 -
Mine only does it with a standalone monitor when the monitor is not connected to something else... not a laptop1
