Claim on home and travel insrance

Hi there,

I recently lost my wedding ring when swimming in the sea on holiday. Can I claim on both my home contents insurance and my travel insurance? The travel insurance claim would cover the excess on my home contents insurance.

Thanks

You can not claim twice for the same item. That would be fraudulent

Your travel insurance will ask who your home insurance is and your policy number. The terms of the two policies will be compared and either one will pay out or they will share the cost of the claim. Make sure you know what the outcome is for declaring claims at the next renewal.

Home will only cover it if you have personal possessions that gives overseas cover (I am guessing you weren't swimming in the English Channel)

Claiming off both would be undue enrichment
  • Thanks for the comments. My home insurance has overseas cover. I was planning on claiming through my home insurance as my travel insurance only covers a small percentage of the rings value.

Surely it's only unjust enrichment if your claims add up to more than the full value. I believe you could claim off both, as long as you advised them that you were doing so, but what the outcome would be would depend on the terms and conditions of the 2 policies. It might be that you could, in effect, claim your home policy's excess from the travel insurance company, but I doubt it. I guess it wouldn't hurt to ask them.
