electric bill in credit Npower won't reinburse

Options
Hi, normally i don't check my bills, as they go out direct debit. This time though i did and i noticed it was in credit by about 700 pounds. With it being x mas and my bank balance near the red i rang up n power and asked for it to be put back into my account before i incur bank charges. This was about 2 weeks ago, i checked my account and nothing had changed. I rang up n power and they said it takes 4 weeks for the balance to transfer. Is this legal, they have been sitting and making interest on my money and now i have to wait 4 weeks. Company policy they said. Does anyone know any different, and can i bill them for the bank charges i am now going to incur.

any help would be appreciated.

warm regards

merry xmas

    Hi,
i think it depends company by company, but for the supplier i work for such a large refund has to be authorised by a section manager. This should take a couple of days at the most then about 7 days at the most to get back into your bank account. It might just be that no one has authorised the refund yet.

Phone up again, ask to speak to a manager and find out when you're going to get the money back. They may not give you all of it back (generally keep back one or two months dd payment).

    hope that helps

Don't forget it is now Christmas & New Year Bank Holiday period

Which means just that, Banks are on holiday and thus the number of "working days" is reduced fro any refund to appear, even if sent Monday it would not show until next Monday ar best, more like 2nd jan

I had my gas and elec through powergen then stopped using the gas, when I transferred to british gas for my elec I found I was £170-ish in credit with powergen, so I asked for it back, they said they could refund some of it but they would need to keep a % of my annual gas usage as a deposit, as I had not used gas for a number of years I asked what the % of zero usage could be, the bloke who was being very helpful by the way admitted that he didn't have a clue as he had never come across a situation like this before, according to his info I would need to disconnect from them (chargeable) then they would refund the difference, If (as I planned) to start using gas again I would need to be reconnected (again chargeable) I told him that was unacceptable, he went off to seek guidance from someone up higher, he came back and said he will put on the records I am disconnected (even though I'm not) and issue a full refund of my credit (received within a couple of days) and should I start using gas again to make sure I let them know so I don’t end-up with a hefty first bill.

I would have to say my conversation with him was both funny and very helpful and was a pleasure actually talking to a customer service rep who wanted to help, a rarity these days.

  • Some time back I had overpaid with npower for my electricity. It was at the time when they had their annual check to see what my monthly dd should be. Npower gave me a full refund of the amount I overpaid without me even asking for it ?

I thought it was great service. Perhaps they have changed their policy on refunds ?
  • Perhaps write to the Ombudsman (details can be found on the back of your bill). And let NPower know you are doing this too.

Also at some stage NPower would have sent you their terms & conditions or standards of service. If you can't find them, perhaps look online or ask for a copy to be re-sent to you. Get yourself armed with what they have promised in regards to services in these.
