Hidden Rise in Gas price.
Options
Has anyone else noticed that Shell has increase the Calorific value of its Gas since the 1st July from 39.7 to 40.3. I Have look back for the last year and it has slowly increased ever price rise.
Calorific Value *2 x 39.3 (July 2022) note * 2 The amount of energy released when gas is burned.
Am I to understand that Gas gives off more enery now that a year ago or is this another sneaky way of gettig more money from us?

The higher the calorific value means more energy output.0

When gas has a higher calorific value you will use less volume so whilst a cubic metre of gas costs more, you get more heating / cooking done, so overall should be cost neutral.2

Shell and other suppliers have no control over what calorific value they use. The figures are provided by the National Grid and suppliers are required to average the daily values over the billing period, rounded to one decimal place2

There is more LNG in the mix, which has a higher calorific value than North Sea gas. But as others have said, the calorific value varies all the time.

We do like a good conspiracy on this forum. Suppliers have, in the past, been fined for using fixed calorific values.
