Open Banking comes to ApplePay

From iOS 17.1, now available in Beta, you can optionally see the balance of some debit and credit cards in ApplePay. Works initially with cards from Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds, RBS, Monzo and Starling.

Sadly, this seems to only work on the phone, not on the watch. May be they’ll add that later

You authorise the connection in Settings

Once the connection is authorised, you can see your up-to-date balance in your Wallet.

  • I’ve only got a Lloyds Bank account from those on the list - I can’t yet see the option. Only available for selected cards possibly while in BETA?
  • I don't know, I don't have a Lloyds card in ApplePay. I got it working on  Starling and Monzo debit card, RBS credit card, and Barclaycard.
  • Good to know, I’ll ask Apple Support tomorrow how to get it.

I have just now added it to a Halifax card,  so I would expect Lloyds should also work

  • It's just as easy (for me, anyway) to open my banking app as it is apple wallet. So I can't really see any purpose to it.
I came into this world with nothing and I've got most of it left.

It's of use, for example, to those who don't take their device with all the banking apps out of the house. It's also of use to quickly establish which card to use for a purchase if you have several cards to choose from. There will no doubt be others I can't think of.

As it is optional, you don't have to use it if it doesn't give you any added value.

I did read over Open Banking some time ago.
Left with thoughts of product leads over finance offers, not very impressive.

  • Apple have, this evening, released iOS 17.1 for all compatible devices.

Out of my current bank accounts, I can use this new Open Banking feature with:

    - HSBC (debit and credit cards)
    - Halifax (debit and credit cards) and
    - NatWest (I only have a debit card to try).

Nationwide, Amex, Santander and Chase are not included at the moment.

  • Another handy feature is being able to view all transactions on a month-by-month basis and also prior years. Much quicker than opening each bank’s app 👍
  • Balances and transactions for Nationwide Building Society current accounts (FlexDirect in my case) can now be viewed via Apple Wallet.
