  • I would prefer to look at the bills of the house and talk to the vendors about their heating habits.

    Tricky when they're dead or in a home, though.

    I doubt that situation applies to every house for sale, in fact I suspect most homes for sale are occupied by owners that are alive and live in the house.

    But if that was the case, the buyer would have to make their mind up based on all the other information available, obviously.

    If the OP was `lucky' enough to find a house for sale where the owners were alive and they were living there then they could ask them and get a better idea about what the house is like to heat.

    The situation of the occupants being dead or in a home applies to over half the properties I have viewed. I have been shocked by how common it is around my way. 

    I've put the strategy of asking to see energy bills away in my head for use in the future.
