Shell Energy Unsually High Usage

Options
Morning everyone.

just had my last two months bills from Shell Energy and they same ridiculously high for this time of year. Even though the prices have come down from last year.

They are saying i have used way more gas and electricity than last year which I can’t believe. If anything it would be the same if not less!

The most unbelievable thing though is they are saying I have used my energy the last two months of summer than what I did in Winter of 2022!

I have contacted them in regards to this query and they have advised to take photos of the meter for 7 days and send them in so they can investigate.

I should also mention I have a smart meter. Another battle I had with them as when they swapped it over early last year the IHD did not work for about 8/9 months.

Wondering whether anyone else has come across this unusual usage the last two months with their supplier?

For clarity, are you talking about the readings on the meter or the IHD, and have you been billed based on smart reads or estimates? Was there an interim estimate and now an accurate read? Also does the meter number on you meter match the one on your bills? Are you able to post a copy of the bill with personal details redacted?

How much energy in kWh have you used in gas and electricity over that two month period, how many days is in that period and what region are you in?

For the avoidance of doubt, the previous issues with your IHD should not have any impact on your billing. The communications hub uses a different communications path to connect to the DCC network.

As posted above, you need to check whether you have been billed on estimated readings. If so, this suggests that your communications hub has an issue. You can check this for yourself by signing up to BRIGHT app. The app uses the DCC network to retrieve usage data from your smart meters. If BRIGHT does not populate then you have an issue. Communications hubs are the sole responsibility of the DCC. If there is an issue, all your supplier can do is to request a DCC investigation and a remote hub reset. If this doesn’t work, your supplier may have to send out an engineer to carryout a manual hub reset.

So how much gas and electricity have Shell billed you for? How much did they bill you for in the same period last year? Are the bills all based on actual meter readings, not estimates?

Do the meter readings also show this? Can you give meter readings for the last couple of months, and fron the same time last year? Do these readings match those used by Shell's billing?

I don't think we can really help without knowing the actual facts.
  • Also for context my bill from 25 Jun to 24 July this year was 198kwh on electricity and 352kwh on gas. Quite a big increase, especially on gas and obviously the boiler hasn’t been on other than hot water like normal 🤷‍♂️

  • So compared the meter numbers from bills to info on Bright and it doesn’t match?

At this time of the year you are heating water from a lower temp.

So this period from 25 Aug to 24 September I have 252kwh on electric and 511kwh on gas.
And are those based on actual meter readings, not estimates?

However when I go back and look at my actual bill from them from 25 Aug to 24 September 2022 I had 210kwh on gas and 406kwh on electric.
It certainly looks as though you have used slightly more electricity and gas this year than last.
    Not "way more".

The numbers in Bright are the DCC references, not the meter numbers.
You'll have to check the meters themselves to confirm the numbers.

You may have what is known as transposed metering. If possible, you need to check your meter serial numbers against what is shown on your statement. To identify the correct meters, run burn tests: that is, turn something like a boiler and/or an immersion heater on. If you are being billed for the wrong meters then come back here for advice.

Although there's nothing yet in this thread to suggest that the OP does have transposed meters.
