Why do you need the eicr anyway? Are you a landlord?

ALL electrical installations should be periodically inspected and tested.

Should be.  But for ordinary residential (non-rented) properties, they aren't.  There's no requirement to have them done.  So nobody does.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

There's a requirement in the Wiring Regulations (Requirements for Electrical Installations).

That may be, but the average householder doesn't know, doesn't care, and it's nobody's job to enforce it.

  • I would pay it and move on. Good electricians are hard to pin down and I wouldn’t upset them over a small job like this when starting to rent a property out.

Think I'll tell him he'll be paid as soon as he confirms the report is ready
Annoyingly I'm on a deadline to get this report so I may have to pay up anyway.

somethings gotta give here you can't play hard ball if you are on a time limit!

The electrician probably has this rule because they haven't been paid before when producing an "Unsatisfactory EICR". certain people think they can just not pay for that, thats not what you're trying to do is it?
if it isn't (and I don't really think it is) then ask yourself what difference it makes if you pay now of after? if you saw the electrician come round and do the testing, and they are a legit outfit, why wouldn't they issue the report as soon as you've paid?
do you think this is some sort of scam where an electrician goes round to someone house and spends time working, then gets a relatively small payment and disappears into thin air and you never get the report? thats ridiculous

As you are going to rent your house I would pay it.

You will hopefully build a degree of trust with the electrician, and will have someone to call on for future works.  ( next EICR, when the tenant has an issue with electrics)
  • That's the way electricians have always done it for my rentals

For a big job, perhaps a rewire? Might make sense to keep some back for snagging or issues.

a report? Come on, just pay the guy !!!!!!
