I would like to do online banking without the need to have a smartphone to access the account. If l lose my smartphone then i have a problem in that i can't make fast online payments.dealyboy said:Santander. Online and telephone banking ... been with them for 35 years don't have their app.
also i would like to use the smartphone as little as possible not everytime i make a payment. Any ideas on which banks do this. I am with HSBC right now. I lost a smartphone and the stress was increased because i could not make any urgent online payments.I went to my medical man. ...
“Well, what’s the matter with you?”

I have not got housemaid’s knee. Why I have not got housemaid’s knee, I cannot tell you; but the fact remains that I have not got it. Everything else, however, I have got.”

The correct question would be "which banks don't do this". With most you don't need a smartphone, including HSBC where you can use a physical 'secure key' instead of your mobile.
If you use online or mobile banking, our physical or Digital Secure Key gives you added protection against fraud. The Secure Key generates a temporary code so only you can access your accounts. They also have a big version for elderly people. But it's either 'physical' or 'digital', not both.

Pretty sure the Co-op Bank offer OTPs via email rather than text if preferred. That would actually avoid the need for any phone, smart or otherwise.0

I don't have a smartphone. I have accounts with barclays, lloyds, rbs, bank of scotland, hsbc, santander, co-op, tesco, sainsbury, first direct, metro, marcus, tsb and I may have forgotten a few. Some of them provide card readers.1

I'd imagine that Lloyds would be the same as they seem to use the same systems with different branding. Nationwide still use card readers for verification, I think they are still learning what a smartphone is!0

I would have said First Direct needs a smartphone. I have an FD account and need to use the app to generate a key to use when logging in on my laptop. I would like to know an alternative way.
As has been said smartphones are a pain ... slow to load, slow to connect, fast to touch a button and take you somewhere else, did I say fast ... very fast to to take you to a different place, rotating the screen, trying to scroll but touching another button, leaving you in a box without a clue. Did I say I hate smartphones too @F37A ?0 -
TSB do online banking through laptop. I'm thinking any security code is sent by text or email whichever you prefer.I haven't logged in for a while (bank only 5mins away which is quicker than ramping up my laptop and going through all the security procedures) but that's how it was set up and I was perfectly happy with it.I did find it useful twice, when the local lbank lines went awol and I could move money to another account and check if a bill had gone through.A TSB branch will help set it up or if you have problems which is a bonus.NatWest is a do it yourself afair. So I never did.
