Holland & Barrett Double Charged on debit card

My wife and I were on a day trip to Harrogate called into H&B to buy some goods total £8.32. Used debit card 1 swiped to pay but cashier said ' its not accepted '. Used debit card 2 which worked got receipt. Few days later found that debit card 1 had gone through as well as debit card 2 ie duplicate charge. Bank said H&B to sort out as not fraud. H&B said to go back to store for refund but it would cost £8.65 on train to get there so I would be in debt. H&B insist only way is to return to store and offered no alternative. Being a senior I had hoped they would have suggested another option.

clearly H&B need to sort this - they could send you vouchers if they can't sort the card problem out

Also.... Are you 100% sure both transactions have completed? One could just sit there pending for a few days before it drops off.

Normally the handset would advise you that the payment was declined.

clearly a mistake if it were me I would try and call the Holland and Barrett store where it happened and explain

if you don't get any resolution then you can always ask for a charge back on the first card on the basis that you were told it was declined

I had a problem some years ago with Thomas Cook. I was buying currency. Card failed on first attempt, went through on second. Unfortunately both lots were taken and it took them five working days to refund.

Thank goodness it was just a couple of hundred for dollars, rather than the whole price if a holiday.

My point was why the assistant said it had not been accepted rather than it shown on the screen.

Final update I made a complaint to the CEO of Holland and Barrett after checking they said there was a double payment taken and reimbursed the money and gave me a voucher as a good will gesture.
