Worldwide Annual Insurance Rules

We will be taking out insurance as a group (son is now 18) but as its so expensive and OH and I have another holiday booked the question is can we still use the same insurance even though son will not be travelling?

Money wise looks to be the better option as its about the same price for annual as it is for the trip to the states on its own.

thanks for reading

It would be worth checking the details of the policy you're interested in but I don't believe that annual policies would generally be restricted to the full group always travelling together, so subsets should be covered....

thanks I've read a few full policies and none categorically state either way, hence the reach out on here :)
  • They can only decline it if they categorically state that all insured persons must be travelling at the same time (which I've never seen on any annual policy)

Why a "group" policy? Is your son still in full time education, if so some family policies would still cover him, check the terms. And if not, he could get a separate insurance policy, then he'd be covered travelling without you, and policies for young people are usually very cheap (assuming no medical conditions)

A group policy  rather than two separate policies means all the group are covered in the event of a claim. e.g If son became ill  and could not travel home then parents would not have any claim for someone staying on with him.

Most travel insurance policies cover the cost of a friend/relative staying with you, or even travelling out to you, if you end up in hospital/unable to travel home due to illness. Obviously check the terms, some may only cover if "medically necessary".
I'm not sure how group policies work, does the whole group have to stay together, if one was ill would they all have to stay, or could as many as want stay, eg if one had to get back for work etc.
Not something I'd ever worry about, main point of travel insurance is medical cover.
