Due to currently unknown issues our house lost connection to the national grid around midday yesterday (23rd September). Several national grid staff came around to locate the issue and started digging the path between the houses (we live in a semi).  They couldn't locate the problem and seem to suggest that they need access to the property next door. The house next door is rented, the tenants appear to be away and we don't have contact details. So National Grid brought a generator and told us to use the electricity and gas as normal. The generator is making considerable noise  :/
My question is: do we need to notify the supplier (ovo) about the issue? I am assuming we don't need to pay extra for the use of the generator etc?

You don't need to inform / contact anyone.  You are back on supply, although by a "noisy" generator, and will just pay for anything that goes through your meter as you normally would have.

Despite noise, suspect far  better to have generator than not.

They normally wire into meter instrad of normal main supply and they pay for petrol /  diesel and the man to deliver it - twice daily at times for the little tank on one's lent to parents and neighbours in past.

Sometimes you cannot run big loads - on the small ones offered by SP in past - been warned e.g. against using 9-10kW electric shower etc.

But do allow GCH, ovens, kettles etc.

Far better than being without power even if a bit noisy, even more so in winter.

It is not that uncommon for house to share tap points off of the main street cables or for cables to be run across other properties.

My SIL lives in the middle of nowhere served by overhead lines, her own is around 3/4 mile.  Every couple of years the DNO turn up with a huge generator trailer and link it to the box on her pole so they can turn off the overhead to trim the trees and undergrowth.  It happily provides enough for the storage heaters of 2 cottages.
