Price of petrol 9p a litre difference between 2 Asda Stores

I live near an Asda store and last night I travelled to another town 20 miles away and happened to pass an Asda store and noticed that their petrol is 145.7p a litre, my local store is 154.7p a litre.
Even though I had enough petrol to get me home I still filled my tank.

Not sure of question but Wisbech to Peterborough is the same. Wisbech is always much more expensive0

Local market and the fact Asda no longer aim to be the cheapest in an area, the downside of the company now being owned by people who also own a large protfolio of petrol filling stations.0

The supermarkets have a high market share of fuel sales, they used to be competitive but currently have no need to be and so prices aren't always best.
Morrisions round our way used to be the cheapest, if even by a penny, now they are one of the most expensive.
Presumably the one that's 9p more expensive has less other places to compete with?In the game of chess you can never let your adversary see your pieces0 -
My ASDA was always cheaper than a petrol station which is about 500 or 600 yds down the road but now is the same price & sometimes 1p more.

As mentioned above...
Since 2020, Asda has been majority owned by the Issa brothers, who also own EG Group. And EG Group own 5,200 petrol stations in the UK and Europe.
It's very possible that the Issa brothers don't want Asda petrol stations to under-cut nearby EG Group petrol stations, so they are adjusting Asda petrol prices accordingly.
But where Asda petrol stations are near rival supermarket, maybe they are offering more competitive petrol prices - to attract shoppers away from their rivals..
I'd be pretty sure that Asda have a petrol pricing team, who look at factors like... the distance to other petrol stations, the distance to other supermarkets, the prices charged by nearby petrol stations, (as well as the wholesale cost of petrol) - to help them decide what petrol prices to charge at each location.

we live in a small market town that only has one petrol station with a mini supermarket. It used to be eye wateringly expensive but got taken over by Morrisons so is quite a bit cheaper.
The nearest town has Tesco, Morrisons and Asda. They seem to take it in turns to be the cheapest but it’s sometimes hard to tell because they change the prices so often.. What also makes a difference is the county. Our county is one of the most expensive, the next one over is one of the cheapest. I usually monitor petrolprices.com before filling up.

We have Asda and Sainsbury's fuel stations 1/2 mile apart.
Asda is always 1p dearer than Sainsbury's.
Local Sainsbury's is 1p cheaper than Sainsbury's 3 miles down the road , in bigger shopping centre.0 -
During the pandemic period my local Esso was the cheapest in town as the supermarkets were profiteering. Now things have got competitive again Asda is always at least 1p below the next cheapest in town. I suppose location makes a difference as my Asda is pretty much in town whereas Tesco is on a trunk road so will pick up passing traffic as the cheapest at 2p below the other on route stations so competes with them.At least (petrol) prices are on the way down again, Asda has gone from 156.7 to 153.7 and Tesco from 158.9 to 156.9 today, diesel stuck at 159.9 though0
