IMPOSSIBLE TO PURCHASE NS&I 6% BONDS

Impossible to buy the 6% bond. I have tried different amounts, different banks but each time it is declined. Why?

A decline would best be investigated via your card issuers. You may have some sort of block in place, or some overzealous security flagging the transactions. Seems unlikely this would affect multiple providers, but large transactions can sometimes be tricky.

You haven't given us much to go on so it's impossible to tell you why, beyond - it's an issue with your bank/card provider. A phone call to your bank(s) will tell you exactly why
Which banks and how much are you trying to transfer?
  • The site worked ok for me yesterday and I used a NatWest Debit card.  However, I did already have a NS&I account set up.  Have you recently moved house and addresses don’t match what is on credit record?
  • We were unable to buy bonds over £25k when paying by debit card. We had proceeds of an inheritance to invest so bought 4x £25k bonds instead of 1x £100,000 bond.

From what I understand you can buy bigger bonds if you are funding through an NS&I saver but we didn’t have one of those.
  • I bought a second bond the other day via a Santander debit card, worked immediately.

If we're talking large amounts it could be this, hard to know without figures.

Unless its a bank issue possibly some of your personal details need checking?

I was just in the process of buying a bond when the browser hanged. Had to close the browser. When I tried to log back in I got

A few weeks ago somebody was complaining they couldn't buy something from NS&I.
They wanted to spend £30k using a Halfiax debit card (I think).
Their bank told them no online debit card transactions above £25k were allowed.
The advantage of funding the bond with money from a direct saver is that the purchase is instant. Also you can open a direct saver using a debit card then top it up with a bank transfer, which again is virtually instant. The downside apparantly is that it takes 5-7 days to open the direct saver account. Unless you already have another account with NS&I, I presume.
This £25k limit might apply to more than just the Halifax.
  • As @ColdIron says, not much info to go on, so impossible to give an answer. More information is needed.

@lr1277 Sorry but I don't entirely agree with your post.
If someone can't make a debit card transaction above £25k, then there is obviously a limit set by their bank.
I had just over £50k sitting in a Halifax Current Account earning nothing, so transferred the £50k to NS&I in one go using my debit card without any problem.
