Do people think that the “my voice is my password” way of accessing telephone banking is safe , what with new AI technology able to copy peoples voices?

I tried to set it up with Santander this morning, but I was put on hold with an estimated wait time of 10 minutes. It usually takes longer than they say, so I rang off. I do not expect that you are going to be able to drain serious money just because you have passed Voice ID, but you may face fewer other checks. None of these measures are 100%.

In 2017 the bank I work for held a roadshow where they were demonstrating the tech, they were calling from a convertible car at 100mph to distinguish the voice patterns of genuine and non genuine callers. Impressive stuff.ranciduk said:Do people think that the “my voice is my password” way of accessing telephone banking is safe , what with new AI technology able to copy peoples voices?0 -
Yes but that was 6 years ago
they didn’t have AI tech then!0 -
I have thus far been completely unable to set up the voice is my password with Santander.0

Back in 2017 the The Economist newspaper was warning there were system that could hear a few words a person spoke and create a replica voice to say anything. At that time Idon't know if AI was involved.

I rang HSBC recently a recorded messages said they were doing away with it and I wasn't asked to say it. They just went through normal security

I have to say that I wouldn't trust it & as I seem to get a fair number of sore throat type issues, it would be foolish to depend on it.

I used to have it with HSBC but they never offered that for security and then they removed the feature saying I never used it!! chance would have been a fine thing.
I think I still have it with LBG but haven't phoned them for a good while.Being polite and pleasant doesn't cost anything!

In 2017 someone managed to breach HSBC's voice ID system and access his twin brother's HSBC account by mimicking his brother's voice to get through their voice ID. See

This was 6 years ago though so they will likely have done some updates to make it more secure but I think the article makes for interesting reading all the same.0 -
HSBC you no longer say my voice is my password you just speak to them in a normal way and it detects it is you and therefore you don't need any passwords or anything you just call them up they use your your registered phone number.1
