Can anyone tell me whether card machines know the difference between a debit card and a phone? I am sometimes asked to insert my card and input the pin. Could the machine ask you to do that when you've used your phone instead of a card?

Contactless is one method of payment and it requires periodic reverification of user ID via the PIN, somewhat random within a 20 use window but also factoring in usage patterns and anti fraud methods. Payment using a phone is a "user device verified" transaction, does not use the card number of the physical card nor does it require the use of the card PIN.dog_nanny said:Can anyone tell me whether card machines know the difference between a debit card and a phone? This doesn't happen with ApplePay. At least it has never happened to me. I pay nearly everything with my watch, using a number of different VISA, Mastercard and AMEX cards. There is also no £100 limit with ApplePay. I believe the same is true for GoogleWallet.

You are correct, no £100 limit on Google Pay or whatever it calls itself.friolento said:MattMattMattUK said:

Sorry for the confusion payment via a phone is "user device verified". There is in theory no longer a limit for Google Wallet or ApplePay, although some terminals have one in place, the largest amount I have paid personally with Wallet is just over a thousand and it went through with no issue.friolento said:MattMattMattUK said:

With Google Pay there is a limit on the amount that you can pay without unlocking your phone (£45 in the UK by default). Unlocking your phone is a security risk if someone snatches it from you, gaining access to all its contents. There is a way of authenticating large payments without unlocking your phone, but I do not know under what circumstances that option is available.

Lloyds do not allow payments greater than £100 using a debit card through Google Wallet, so there may be a bank defined limit on any card. And yes I have asked if this limit could be increased, they said definitely not.0

Can't comment for Apple Pay but I've been asked infrequently to use my biometrics with Google Pay but when in the US, I noticed that it happened more regularly than in Europe (including the UK)friolento said:MattMattMattUK said:

Yes, some card machines do know. The one at my work either says Card or Device on the receipt for contactless payments.I've never seen this happen with Apple Pay, but some Android phones cause the machine to say "see phone for instructions", which usually means they have to unlock their phone and retry.0
