don't like standing orders.too used to paying via a DD with stepchsnge.so maybe just see what systems the creditors prefer.i know some have a phone number to make a payment and a number to arrange a payment plan. dd.
tbh.the whole plan is to max out expenses on my budget plan in order to put away savings so in the future say 6 to 9 months plus.

Standing orders are much easier as you can just change them in your banking app whenever you want to. Other methods will involve contacting the creditor to change the amount which will be far more hassle.

I think you are missing my point about your budget. Your budget should be about managing your own affairs to make sure you have money for everything without getting short or needing further credit. It's not something to fiddle to try and convince the creditors of anything, you can tell them anything you want or nothing at all. It's the same with any F and F offers you might make, you simply say I've got £x.xx I can give you to clear the debt, do you want it or shall I offer it to someone else?

I always was told it is impossible to stop a standing order.not want to fiddle.justvwant to try and save as much as possible  to eventually make F and F offers and at the same time make some sort of payment to creditors whilst I give myself some quality of life

Should I use a direct debit or standing order for regular payments? - Which?

Yes, pretty much.  YOU tell THEM how much you are paying.  Unless, of course, you get a letter before action in which case you come back here for further advice - but that's a LONG way off.  BiB x

Wow Stu, this threads going at 1000 miles an hour, let me reiterate again, there is no requirement to make any kind of payment once a CCA request has been submitted, not until they have responded and sent you what you have asked for.

If at some future time you want to make offers on your debts, National Debtline have a template letter just for that purpose, it can be found here -

Sample Letter - Settlement offer | Sample letter | National Debtline | National Debtline

You will notice no explanations or budget information is required, just do what it says on the tin.

As for paying creditors, most have websites that take payments, the company banking information is also displayed, there are numerous ways to pay that do not involve any kind of contact with that company.

Stepchange offer a regimented regime, as they are mainly creditor funded, and have to keep you paying regularly in order to keep their FCA accreditation.

When you self manage, there are no restrictions or requirements of you, you pay what you can afford to pay, or what you want to pay, debt collection companies will not refuse any kind of payment, and you are not contracted to any minimum amount or frequency of payment.

I used to pay maintenance to my daughter years ago from first marriage.sometimes I couldn't afford the amount.tried to stop it at bank.was told by bank I could not.it wasn't like a DD where I could cancel it even in the day it was due out of bank.

  • not sure how many defaulted.i assume it's all of them cos I got letters saying as you have not made the min  or correct payment for 2 months you are in default.can I ask how do I write cheques for the searches for my wife as only I have a cheque  book I wish to pay the £1 fee for my wife and avoid postal order charges as I can see us at the post office counter for ages as we fill in the orders then seal letters then get recorded delivery.
I want letters all ready to go at the post office.so how exactly do I do that.write cheques for my wife search fees.
Stu The companies are not interested in the bank account the cheques are drawn on so just send your wife's from your cheque book.
Don't bother with recorded delivery, a waste of money ask the post office for proof of posting, it's free.
Oh and stamps go up in price from 2nd October so do it this week.
Our prices (valid from 2 October 2023) (royalmail.com)
