No heating old thermostat issue?

Options
My system had a British Gas programmer, and downstairs there was a manual thermotat. I recently ripped out the BG programmer and dropped a Hive into the same slot. With temperatures coming down, I thought I'd try and fire up the heating. Nothing. Hot water yes heating NIL. Without digging into the world of boiler faults, am I right in suspecting there's some re-wiring I needed to do for the ON signal to hit the boiler. I mean I'm guessing there's some wire that the old thermostat downstairs has whereas I need to redirect that wire up to where the Hive receiver lives (where the BG programmer used to live)

Any thoughts?

  • The you should be able to replace an old programmer with a Hive Receiver but that would normally communicate wirelessly with a Hive Thermostat.  Sounds like you have the one but not the other?

This image might make things easier. Just a case of what needs to go where as I'm trying to bypass the old thermostat.

FG, have you tried turning that new Hive up to turn on the CH, and then ALSO turning up the ol' manual thermostat until it goes 'click'?
If this works to turn on the boiler to provide CH, then try turning the Hive back down again to turn the CH off. Give it 30 seconds to respond as it guards against repetitive on/offs.
If this also works - ie the Hive does what it should, turning the CH both on and off as required, then it would appear that all you'd need to do is to keep the manual 'stat up at max!
Or, you could look at by-passing it - that'll need some care.

    First thought, ProperPriorPlanningPreventsPissPoorPerformance.

Second thought, your pictures are crap, lacking in necessary detail with too many shadows.

Third thought, you should first read and understand the wiring schematic diagrams for the old stat, programmer and the Hive that you want to replace them with and not just guess where to terminate wires if you expect it to work.

Forth thought, most stats have volt free contacts and your Hive baseplate has a bridging link missing between the 2nd terminal and the 3rd terminal like your old stat had between terminals 2 and 4 to provide the volts required by your boiler.

Fifth thought, the Hive baseplate wire that you have put in terminal 4 needs to be moved to terminal 3 (Heating ON)

Well you did ask for thoughts!

DIY is fine as long as you understand what you're doing before starting, then feel the warmth.

Is your existing room stat still in place and you haven't linked it out or disconnected it? That's a problem. And as the others said you haven't linked the live to common on the Hive receiver and your heating on wire is in the wrong place, you can't just plop a receiver on and expect it to work.
  • Done anything about this, Flats?
What was the model of the BG programmer? And which Hive are you using?
    Photos, please.
  • As you clearly didn't test what you done and wiring is not your forte , I suggest you ask someone you know to rectify this for you , dodgy wiring can damage the boiler if you are not careful

Golden rule of thumb is if it worked before you messed with it and it doesn't after, you have caused the fault
