New Carron sink stained and marked

Hello

Bought a Carron sink which plumber installed. I haven't used it yet as I believe the stains and marks are not what I expect on a new, expensive sink
The store from which I bought it advised I try cleaning a small part with autosol which left that spot a completely different colour to the rest of the sink. They then contacted Carron who have now advised I clean the entire sink with autosol. Store said they've never seen this in a sink before. The streak in the third photo is after autosol. The sink has still not been used.

I don't feel this is what would be usual for a new more expensive sink - an older person doing manual labour to try to bring the sink up to the standard of a cheap sink. But it's a long time since I  bought a sink and don't know if this is the new normal.

Does anyone have any ideas or advice?

  • I understand the feeling of disappointment when you've paid for a shiny new sink.

If it makes you feel any better, in my experience it's pretty standard for stainless steel sinks to pick up very noticeable marks and scratches when new. I hated the way ours looked a couple of months in - there were obvious scratches in a pattern where the washing up bowl sat in it, for example.

I reckon they start looking much better when they pick up more scratches, essentially when they're scratched all over and it just looks like a natural surface texture. Friends kept their old sink when they had a new kitchen, because they also thought a new stainless sink never looks as good as one that's been worn in.
  • Try barkeepers friend, Carron stainless used to recommend it. Its dead cheap - £2 - product and cleans off marks and stains like you won't believe.

    Thanks both, that's reassuring
  • Your sink will never look at good as the day it's installed. Stainless steel marks and dulls, it's what it does but barkeepers friend is fantastic. Just don't leave it on for more than a minute, literally or it will strip all the colour from the sink.
