Back billing on an increased tariff

I have a question i need answering.
I have been paying my bills on the same energy tariff for the past 18 months. I have just received a letter notifying me that my tariff is going to increase, which I accept. But it then says that they are going to back bill me for the last 6 months at this new increased tariff. Surely this isn't allowed?

If i had known that I was going to be paying at the increased tariff through that 6 months period I would have taken steps to reduce my energy usage further.

Any advice appreciated

Think you are going to have to provide details of what rates they have been charging you for the past 6 months, ideally the tariff name too, and what they are about to put you on.

    Is this a domestic tariff?

Yes, it is allowed. All suppliers make mistakes. Under BackBilling regulations, suppliers can correct bills backwards by up to 12 months. I think that you are being offered a good deal.

What have they actually said and who is your supplier? Considering that for almost everyone tariffs have dropped over the last six months it seems odd you have had increases.

Could have attempted to roll it back 18 months (not allowed under Back Billing) so the earliest would be 12 months, but have gone for 6 months in recognition of their mistake.

Were you on a cheaper fix that expired 6 months ago but the continued charging you on the cheaper rate? If so then yes the can bill you for the correct prices from when the tariff ended
  • I think the OP needs to explain exactly what their situation is here - it's not exactly clear currently!
