IN HOME DISPLAY

I'm with OVO and they installed first generation smart meters many years ago. I have asked for an in home display but they say they are not making them for the old meters. I've asked for new meters but they refuse.
Told me to look at usage on the online account but it's always a day behind so I can see what I used yesterday but no idea on real time usage.
Can I insist they upgrade

  • If your SMETS1 meters are now ‘adopted by and enrolled on’ the DCC network, you can buy an IHD from Hildebrand or Chameleon (IVIE). They will pair their device to your comms hub before dispatch.

Suppliers only have to support the IHD that they provide for 12 months post smart meter installation. Suppliers are fined if they replace working SMETS1 meters with SMETS2.

Many smets1 meters have been migrated and those that cannot be are meant to be - if not yet -  being upgraded against another set of target dates.

But the apps are all retrospective - no live usage  - they request the e.g. 1/2 hr data from meters after the event.  Those relying on daily DCC upload get data following day.

So if want live data you need to buy an aftermarket ihd pre configured to talk to your meter as above.

Some will not only sell you an ihd but will also sell a "cad" device to get smart linked real timedata to monitoring apps if your into that.

See a general guide to info at e.g.

    https://www.smartme.co.uk/meter-data.html

Whatever route you choose make sure you use the vendors meter compatibility checks.

It's probably better with smets2, but when I looked a while back out of curiosity rather than need as have a functioning ihd -  one of the 2 did not support support my smets1.

The IHDs generally came with a 1 year guarantee.  After that, many suppliers had stocks and would send them out.  But once they run out, that's it.

You can't insist on the meter being replaced if it's working and within its calibration date.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

Just a thought, don't know if it helps.....

If you switch suppliers to Octopus you can get a device they call the Octopus mini which sends near real time data to their app. The advantage of this route is you won't have to pay for it. There is (or was?) a waiting list of a few weeks for the mini.
  • Thanks to all of you for advice.

I've been on the list for months now, wouldn't count on getting one quickly.
