Gym before work membership

Hi there,

Food for thought.... on the way to work I pass a gym. Off peak membership £11.99 a month, off peak hours (open 24/7) (OP- 0000hrs-0600hrs/ 0900hrs-1600hrs/ 2000hrs-0000hrs) basically if I go to the gym before 0600hrs have a workout and shower! (shower being the thing here!) I could come out about even on the cost side of things + a gym membership. Let me explain...

At home I'd normally wake up, have a coffee and a shower for 10min then get to work.
Cost= coffee, shower (42kw combi boiler= 10min shower= 0.0737p/kw x 10min= £3.10/per hr/ 6= £0.52p/ per 10min shower x 5 days= £11.26 per month to shower!

If I get up early enough I can have a good workout every morning (mon-fri) and shower free after at the gym, makes sense. Not to mention free coffee and tea there!

The gym is 'the gym group' by the way £11.99 per off peak membership. Balance the cost of a shower at home against the membership cost at a gym. Like I said food for thought for some people out there. Thanks

  • ...... or just cut your morning shower down to 3 minutes and not bother with the gym. Even greater savings! 😁

    Ten minutes in the shower!!!!

I am in and out in about 90 seconds, what are people doing for ten minutes in there?

If you want to join a gym and will actually use it, as a gym, then I looks like a pretty good price.

If whilst there, you use their shower facilities, you get even more 'monies worth'.

However, it's a completely false economy if you were to use it just to shower at.

How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)

First of all, what are the rules of Off Peak? Can you only enter at those times or only be in the gym at those times?
Secondly what time do you start work?

If for example you have to vacate the gym by 6am and you dont start work until 9am what are you going to do for those 3 hours?

Are you sure your sums are right? Does your 42Kw boiler always operate at 100% for the full time of your shower?

Given these gyms are unstaffed for periods, and access is through a Pin system, it's likely the pin will not let him in during the Peak times but will happily let him out.  So he could happily go to the gym at 5.50am and get in.

Nor will staff walk around at the time changeover to kick people out as they won't have a clue on sight who has what type of membership.

Those off-peak hours are quite generous.  Do you have to enter the gym by 6 am, or leave by 6am?

You have calculated that just for your shower is 5 kWh of gas.  We use max 15 kWh gas per day during the summer when only gaining hot water and that is for all the household use all day long, and via an old fashioned hot water tank so a proportion of that hot water heating energy is lost as the tank cools.

Then your mention of "free coffee and tea" while at the gym.  That is a very unusual thing for a gym to include within the membership - it is common for coffee and tea to be available but often at coffee-shop prices.  Are you certain the gym is offering free coffee and tea?

Does the gym offer a no-contract / one-month membership?  It may cost more than the £12 per month but could be worth a try to see how it works out.  If you find you have the gym membership but practicalities mean you are still showering and having the morning cuppa at home, you will at least know without needing to then keep paying for a year.

The Gym Group wont be offering free tea and coffee, unsure where the OP has heard that.

    Picking a random one...

    https://www.thegymgroup.com/find-a-gym/birmingham-gyms/birmingham-city-centre/

    No mention there.

They all seem pretty standard although the price differs by location and promo.
  • Thanks for the replies people. Thank you. I start work at 0730hrs (20-25min drive max), I wake at 0600hrs and get ready, shower, coffee ect- leave at 0655hrs. The gym is 15min drive away then a further 5-10 min to work.
I have calculated that if I get up at 0500hrs I can get straight to the gym for 0515hrs and finish workout at 0645hrs (1hr 30min) ready to get to work a 5-10min drive away. The biggest thing here is getting up at 0500hrs!!!!

Yes, sorry the gym has no coffee or tea I've read that somewhere. Thanks

Have you verified exactly what the off-peak access until 06:00hrs means?
Is it that you must be in the gym by 06:00hrs but can then stay as long as you wish?  So, until 06:45hrs in your case.
OR do you have to be in and out by 06:00hrs?  Including any shower, refreshments, etc?

As already said, there is no mechanism in place in a 24 hour gym to kick people out at the off peak-peak changeover time, as long as he gets there before 6 and enters his pin it will let him in. I am a member of a Pure Gym (another 24-hr gym chain) and no mechanism exists to boot people out, staff wont know who has what type of membership.

Its entirely possible that if they see him logging out the building after 6am constantly he might get an email or moved onto the full membership, however.
