Momentarily moving moving away from the cost of fish (sorry, I mean sheds) and segueing back to the original question…You ask for others’ experiences, successes or failures, and on the strength of my own, I’d say go for it!I’m past it now but never regretted stretching myself to the biggest mortgage I could afford, nor taking on a wreck; from the £10 grand dump in pre-hip Brixton in 1975, to some rough places in SE London for £34k in ‘85 and £67k in ‘97 (a couple lacking a few basics such as a watertight roof, central heating or decent kitchens and bathrooms).I only came unstuck once (a holiday flat on the Kent Coast; another wreck without safe electrics, c/h or decent kitchens and showers) as I bought that for £152k at the peak just before the 20-25% house price crash of 2008. And as that involved a lot of DIY and TLC as well as Electricians and Gas fitters for the pukka bits, we didn’t actuallly lose money; just got it evens after letting it out for a couple of years for the rental income.I didn’t have kids on the early ones, and I did have somewhere else to crash for a few months during the really heavy work on the one with no roof or heating or kitchen. … But I’d do it all again as it was all really financially sound, giving us security in retirement as well as lovely places to live!
so if the family are on board… YES1 -
Having had to rent for a big part of my adult life due to debt brought on by divorce (and all that it entails, like selling at a loss, being a single parent etc), moving house and area when it's been my decision is a luxury to me now. It's all relative to other stresses in life. I have a very good friend who has never moved house, never experienced grief, never got divorced, never had debt, never been without a job. She would love to move now the kids have flown but she hadn't got the courage. Our house is 200 years old and we are slowly doing it up (it's ok to live in we're just doing it a bit at a time). I'm just grateful I have a roof over my head.1

We definitely had a wobble when we put our last house on the market - we had transformed the place and it looked so lovely in the marketing material! However it was definitely the right decision to sell. We now live in our favourite village with a lovely view and have parking (it was a nightmare at our last place). Having doubts is natural but you can’t let them get in the way of your dreams.1

I had a wobble aswell when selling my house where i had lived for 23 years. It looked so lovely in the sales photos and video i almost changed my mind. My friend said “ it looks lovely because you’ve moved half of your possessions up to the loft!”1
