Neo Energy
Options
Hoping for some advice. I had my energy last year supplied by Neo energy, which obviously failed and I was transferred to Octopus. I am owed around £650 since my direct debits were greater than my usage. The ombudsman doesn’t seem to want to help, since Neo energy doesn’t exist anymore as a company. Any advice on if there is anything I can do?

Was the credit not transferred to Octopus under the SoLR (Supplier of Last Resort) procedure?0

You should have received a Final Bill from Neo as Octopus (the SoLR) and Neo’s administrator had to agree a transfer reading to set up your Octopus account.
If I recall, Neo was linked to Northumbria Energy which was dissolved a year ago. Your only hope is that Octopus has your final balance on file. If so any credit/debit balance should have been applied to your Octopus Energy account.
If Octopus cannot help then you might have to put this one down to experience. Some of the companies that failed had very poor customer account systems.0 -
Neo was a mess from day one. I very much doubt any records which could be audited with accuracy were passed to Octopus.0

I have a similar problem to Dbarbour. My account was with Igloo and when they went bust I was transferred to Eon Next. Eon Next say that they were not given my credit (almost £300) and the Ombudsman is not interested. Am I wrong in thinking that all customers should have been protected from losing their money when these companies all went bust? I have all the screenshots of my credit amount which I got from Igloo before they went out of business, but their liquidators just say they can't help. I can't see where the protection is?0 -
Suppliers are not required to hold consumer accounts in escrow. When a supplier goes bust, consumers fall into the unsecured creditors category and at best you would get back pennies in the £ were it not for Ofgem.
Some years ago, Ofgem brought in the Consumer Levy which protects/insures consumer credits when a supplier goes bust. The SoLR pays out the credit and we all pay for the protection via our standing charges. Before it will do anything, the failed supplier’s Administrator has to produce a Final Bill showing the amount of credit in the account. The Ombudsman cannot help because failed suppliers have their Supply Licences revoked.0 -
