Car Tax Issue
Hi,
I have an issue with car tax at present. My tax was up on September 1st and I renewed it for one year, however, I plan to sell the car at the beginning of October and my new car is due to arrive tomorrow.
However, my partner's car failed an MOT and is beyond repair. They want to drive my old car for a few weeks until they find a replacement. Their car that is beyond repair has about 4 months of tax left.
What is the best way to manage this?

declare your partners car as SORN ( keep it off the road ) - you'll get a refund.
When you sell your car, you'll send in bits of the V5 - you'll get a refund.
Both you and your partner will take out new tax on your new vehicles when they arrive.1 -
That makes sense. My partner is declaring their vehicle as off the road. How about my old car that my partner will be driving and the new car that that is arriving?DE_612183 said:declare your partners car as SORN ( keep it off the road ) - you'll get a refund.

The old one is already taxed. The dealer will let you tax the new one online.1 -

That being the case, you don't need to do anything tax-wise about that one - your partner can just drive it (assuming they're insured to do so, of course). When the time comes to sell your old car, you'll get a refund of any full unused months of tax. When your new car arrives, you just tax that as usual.
Do remember that the car has to actually be kept off the road whilst it's SORN'd. Off the road usually means your own private driveway, or similar. Not in a lay-by on a public road, as I saw just the other week where I live - 3 cars parked in a lay-by with DVLA wheel clamps on them, I assume they were untaxed and the DVLA were having a bit of a crack-down.newbieni said:

You do not need to change the car tax to your partner's name, if that is wht you are thinking. You are still the registered keeper.
You need to ensure your partner is insured to drive your old car.0
