I put a deposit of £3500 on a Kitchen door company, had a bit of a mix up and on the day the surveyor was coming I had organised and forgotten (as I had been away on my hols) I had another company coming to give me a price too,
Thinking he was the surveyor I was talking to him for about 15 mins and it suddenly dawned on me he wasn't the surveyor.
I quickly apologised and explained what had happened and he said since I am here should I give you a price? I said ok as I felt a bit bad at this mistake. He asked me how much I was paying for the one I had paid the deposit on and I told him, he did his thing and came back with a price £1200 cheaper, of course I wanted this new price!
When the surveyor arrived I explained what had happened a genuine honest mistake and that i think i prefer to go with the new kitchen company as it would save me £1200. I said i did not want to continue but the man stood with his foot in my door and would not budge, eventually he just walked in and started measuring, I refused to sign the documentation he presented me with and emailed the company and told them i was not going to continue with them.
They said because the man came in the house and did the survey It is a binding document and I would lose my deposit. Two other people witnessed this man coming in my house uninvited by me.
I sent in a cancellation email stating I wanted my deposit back as I was still in my 14 day cooling off period.
After some seriously scary emails from the company I am now unsure what to do.
They say either I stay with them or lose my deposit.
I am not sure what to do.

Personally I wouldn't have let the surveyor in, foot in the door etc., is very heavy handed and personally, even if I was going to lose the deposit I wouldn't use them, mainly as I'd be concerned they'd bully me on other things.
How did you pay the deposit?0 -
I was stupid and paid by debit card0

I signed the original contract, when they give me a price. He told me the price but later on I've noticed a comment that I have to pay the fitters a further £8000

Unfortunately I think you either proceed with this company, or you write off that deposit - frankly they sound like cowboys, and I expect if you keep going with them, you'll find they add on other "extras" further inflating the price.
Also (too late now, but) why did you pay the deposit if you still had other people coming round to quote? The time for deposits is after getting quotes in.0 -
Hi,with telling the surveyor what the first quote was he was obviously going to come in cheaper, (think double glazing salesmen). You should've called first company, said you had a better deal and try to knock them down in price.Agree with Emmia above, paying deposit before getting quote meant they could think up any price.
