Hi, daughter has driving test tomorrow (wednesday), if she passes her learner insurance will cease and we will be buying her full car insurance- to complicate matters- she is off to university on Sunday (has a car parking place at halls as is a student nurse)- so should we use her current postcode (home) or her her student postcode for the quotes/policy- keen not to have to pay admin fees for the sake of 3/4 days
thanks

You use the postcode where she is resident and where the car is going to be located. Doing anything else will likely invalidate the policy.

Cant she just hang on 4 days before driving?

So the car is only being purchased today also? If not, what situation is the car in now?

If the car hasnt been bought yet, put that off until the weekend. Your daughter will have to learn life is rubbish and some things have to wait, unless she is prepared to stump up all the address change fees for the sake of waiting 4 days?

nope she has the car now
it is insured in her name on a learner policy
the learner policy ceases the day she passes her test
therefore she will need a new policy as a full licence holder

I see. Well here are your options then:

    - Insure the car at Property A for now, change it to Property B on Sunday, you pay any address change fees
    - Insure the car at Property A for now, change it to Property B on Sunday, your daughter pays any address change fees (if applicable, its possible the change of address may reduce the premium)
    - Lie to the insurance company for the sake of 4 days and insure it at Property B from today. I wouldnt suggest this course of action and me posting this isnt an endorsement of this course of action.
    - Leave the car uninsured for 4 days, off road, and hope nothing happens to it, and then insure at Property B. Same caveat as above.

Its probably easier if she fails her test tbh!

    You’re over-thinking this.

Use the uni address, the four days at home are neither here nor there. Otherwise we’ll all have to tell our insurers every time we spend a night at friends, or a week at the seaside. And your daughter would have to tell them when she comes home at Christmas.

All the insurers want is the “usual” place the car is kept.

Erm, no. I suspect that as of the 12th September (today) her tenancy hasnt even started at the uni address, its a bit different than going on holiday mid-policy.

If something happened to the car on Friday it wouldnt at all surprise me if they got out of paying if the uni address was used.
  • Ummmm I'm not an insurance expert, but when you do a proposal for a year, you are asked where the car will normally be kept.  Over the next year, more often than not, that will be at Uni.
  • Why don't you call the insurer and ask their advice?

    Either above option. Or halls.
Or if anything happens at halls, you are giving them a opt out on any claim for wrong address.
