Flea treatments - what and where do you buy?

As per the title, I'm looking for experiences and opinions.
I've two cats - one not quite 12 months and around 2kg and one 10 years and ~over 4kg.
Previously with cats I've alternated every 6 months between going to the vet to get them combo flea'd/worm'd and buying advantage. Last time it was at the vets (at the same time as getting the kitten fixed). This time I'm debating the best option.
Is advantage still effective at killing fleas (I know they can build a resistance over time)?
Is there a sensible alternative than having to buy two packs (one under 4kg and one over)?
Are there any good deals/places to buy people can recommend (I normally buy at pet drugs online with top cash back)?
Thanks in advance.

I'm not an early bird or a night owl; I’m some form of permanently exhausted pigeon.

I use credelio chewable tablets - 1 a month. They cover cats from 2kg-8kg. https://www.petdrugsonline.co.uk/credelio-chewable-tablets-for-cats-48mg1

I use advantage (and drontal for worms), but I don't treat my cats and dogs every month - probably 2-3 times a year. It's always been effective for me but I know experiences do vary. Totally get what you mean about the two packs thing - one of my cats (18 months old now) is a little under 4kg and the other two are larger, so I have to get two. Same issues with my dogs, as one is a little under 25kg and one a little over.1

We also buy Advantage for our two cats (also used it to our dog who unfortunately passed away about a year ago). Among all products we tried, Advantage turned out to be the most effective.
