Knocking through mid floor landing to build additional stairs to a planned extension.
I do not want to call SE just yet before I commit myself to this approach. Besides his wasted time there will be a charge so I want to make sure I am charged for something that is likely to work.
As others have said, any bill for the SE will seem like lose change when the builders start destroying things. Our builder woudlnt do anything 'off plan' without checking with the SEs as they have worked together for 20 years+.
It's the job of the SE to make sure a design is going to work, don't try and do their job for them!

Sounds like a builder worth knowing. Some will come in, knock things about without consulting an SE - Builders are not qualified to give an opinion whether something is structural. Yes, they may have the experience of working on similar properties and make inferences, but they will be long gone if/when cracks start to appear.
If you can't afford to pay a structural engineer, you won't be able to afford to have the work done.
