What is the use/purpose of diamond shaped wood on shed roof ends?

I don't bother with lucky horseshoes. If you hang them with the open end upwards, the devil can make a nest in there. But if you hang them open end downwards, the good luck falls out. Conclusive proof that the whole thing is pointless.

My shed is plastic with aluminium frame - nothing to protect. And it still has it -

lovely shed Grumbler but that's a desolate location you have there.
