That said, I would contact Amex and see when the purchase posted, if it didn't post until after the flight had departed, you may have more clout with BA. I have notification/ alerts on my Amex app on my phone, so I know if a transaction has gone through.
Why would when BA took the money have anything to do with if you are eligible for a refund or not @slivercar? Scheme rules generally gives them 6 months to take payment, its just up to them if they want the credit risk of allowing someone to fly before the money is in the bank. The contract is formed when the offer is accepted and the parties accept the consideration... consideration doesn't need to be actually paid for the contract to be binding

Admittedly some years ago but when living at Uni one mini-supermarket would routinely only show 2-3 days after you bought from the shop at the weekend. Never considered that this delay could create a right of return for those drunken small hours of the morning purchases (think we ended up with at least a dozen cans of squid in ink)

Certainly having notifications turned on is sensible and may have helped. Similarly just going back into the BA app or their emails would have spotted the booking - the later also could have given a notification.

BA won't ticket the booking until payment has been taken. The other option is to ask BA when it was ticketed. If you can show it wasn't ticketed until after check in closed, BA should refund.
