Unemployment protection

I'm considering taking out unemployment cover, but have one question I need answering before I can think about taking it out, but it's the one question that no-where seems to answer!

I have a middle management position paying a fairly decent salary .. if I take out unemployment protection and then find myself unemployed, the T&C's seem to state that I need to make myself available for work and registered unemployed - this would imply that if a shelf stacking job was available in a supermarket I would have to take this job...

Obviously from my point, I would want to seek a similar job to the one I was made redundant from....

Many thanks for any help !

You have to be registered unemployed (prevents garden leave style unemployment or claims for holiday gaps between employers).

When you register unemployed, you have something like 4 months where you can hold out for jobs that you are experienced for but still be paid benefit.

  • Be careful about the policy you take out. I found myself in a very similar position (decent salary, car etc.) and took out a policy which would pay my mortgage in the event of unemployment. Unfortunately I was made redundant about two years later. I looked closer at the policy and discovered that it started paying out after 90 days of unemployment in arrears (so I would have to wait 120 days for an actual payment). During that period I would have had to sign on once a fortnight and if one visit was missed the clock would go back to day one.

I don't know where you live but where I do anybody can get some kind of job to pay the bills within four months!

Needless to say I found another job and cancelled the policy.
