Income Tax claim by Tax Tree without my permission

I received a letter from HMRC in June saying I was due a rebate on income tax paid in the last 2 years. The cheque didn't arrive so I looked again and saw they had sent the cheque to Tax Tree. I have never used this company and I certainly haven't authorised them to claim on my income tax. I did receive emails from someone (not them) asking me to sign up for tax refund help on PPI that I claimed myself several years ago. I ignored them. The more I look online the more confused I become. It seems that HMRC must have had an assignment form from them but it certainly didn't come from me. How can I sort this out? They say I am due £1300 and when I looked into the company I found (buried deep) that they charge 45%. This is insane.

Maybe the starting point is for you to ask HMRC for a copy of the authorisation you supposedly signed?

I have written and asked for the authorisation from HMRC. I have also heard from Tax Tree who said that I gave my permission to a firm that checked for PPI refunds owed. This is true several years ago and apparently they are a part of the same group. What doesn't make sense is their claim that I would have been charged 20% tax on PPI refunds. This is obviously not correct as I didn't receive any refunds. It all seems very fishy.

You mean they have submitted a tax refund claim with completely fictitious statutory interest and tax deducted figures 😳
