Cheque clearing

My friend is very frustrated with cheque clearing at Santander. 🤬

Just started work . The owner prefers to pay wages by cheques whilst in probation period. First wage cheque was lucky partner banked in during working week . It was cleared quickly. 

2nd cheque received Thursday . Santander branch Closed at 3pm . finish at 6pm . Had Friday off , so deposited directly into branch 10am. Told won’t get paid until Tuesday after service. Not good for me . Kids go back Tuesday. So having to borrow money to pay for school meals . Clearing cheques on most working days a lot better . Why my cheque is going to take so long to clear. When branch is open Saturday until 12.30 pm .  This method of payment needs to be adjusted for weekend clearance. She has worked the hours , so why can’t she be paid when needed. 

Over probation period next week . Hurrah wages paid by bank transfer🙂

Was this last Monday August 28th which was a Bank Holiday and will have delayed clearance ?

Does your friend not have a banking app that allows you to photograph cheques and pay in that way?
Why does it affect you paying for kids school meals?
Anyway sounds as though it's a moot point now but you can always switch banks if unsatisfied with the service.

banking apps seem to work ok for this (well it did when I tried it last week) 

suspect they had spent all of the first cheque so no money to give the kids for lunch

It’s standard practice  for cheques to clear by the end of the next working day. Saturday and Sunday are not classed as working days. 

As frustrating as the situation may have been, it’s not really the fault of the bank that your friends employer chose to pay them by cheque therefore delaying getting their wages.
