However, the most they would offer was 90% so I still ended up paying £1000 on a £10k bill. But could have been worse.I

I'd probably accept that rather than going legal route if Honda gave me that choice!  How long ago was that?
About 4 years ago now. It's a known issue with the Volvo D4 engines - the piston rings get clogged.

A quick Google says the new Honda Civic has a 5-year or 90,000-mile warranty, yours is different I assume.

Gen 10 Civic is 3 years warranty with (now) a 10 year warranty on the dodgy Air con condenser

So yesterday I was told by Honda, there's a recall for my honda civic model for the issues I had & warranty has been extended to 7 years & should be fixed for free!  Just waiting for confirmation now!

All fixed for free & back on the road!  Almost 4 months with no car but the nightmare is over now!

Great news, good to see Honda standing by their product.

  • Hi. I hope.my message finds you well. Your post has been very helpful. I am actually in a Very similar situation to you. I have 2018 1.0 civic that just would not start and the honda dealer garage that did the last 2 service said the engine has gone. It has done 52k on the clock and just had the service done by the same Honda dealer last week. They are quoting me £15,000 repair. I have not got any extended warranty on the car. The honda dealer garage has put in a claim to honda on my behalf but I have been informed this morning that the claim was rejected. I have contacted Honda for a goodwill repair and I am still expecting a reply from them. My greatest fear is if that is rejected too, what do I do.
The car was bought from a Honda Dealer, the same dealer that I bought my last honda from and this is my 3rd honda civic in the last 13 years.
This specific honda has only been serviced with Honda from new when I bought an approved used when it was just 3 years old.

I am really struggling at the moment. I don't even know what leg I have to stand on.
  • Sorry, I've only just seen your message today!  I hope they sorted your car out but I think the motor ombudsman is only good because it's free but it takes forever, months to get anywhere!  I'd never buy from Honda again after my experience!
