Do I need planning permission?

In practice I doubt outward opening gates would cause an issue in the OP's case as long as they were only opened briefly for access. I'd assumed the nearest garage was the OP's anyway - but admittedly I can't see this stated explicitly so it's probably worth clarifying. The problem is the OP would need the landowner's permission for the gates to open outward. I'm not as optimistic as some that the owner of the tarmac area would be helpful, and I'm not sure permission would be forthcoming. I'd take a wild guess the freehold might belong to the owner of the cartlodge. There's also the possible issue that if the gates aren't properly secured there's a risk of them swinging outwards and hitting a vehicle parked on the tarmac area.... whilst some may say "that will never happen", if it did, it could be an insurance nightmare. It only takes a momentary lapse, and a gust of wind.1
