Interesting read! I ended getting an AndrewJames one on @pumpkin89's suggestion for a much more reasonable £30.goldfinches said:I noticed that your Creami came top in a GH review recently, it's here Best ice cream makers 2024 UK – tried and tested (goodhousekeeping.com) and thought you might like to see the write up.

Now you've owned it for a while what do you think of it? I've definitely decided to change from using my Kitchen Aid ice cream attachment to something more convenient this year because the bowl of the KA is so unwieldy to pre-freeze. I'm beginning to think about whether I get something easier to fit in the freezer or buy a machine that freezes from scratch so, if you can spare a few minutes, I'd love to hear your verdict.May No-Spend Days 3

I used to have one of the pre-freeze-the-bowl ice cream makers (possibly Andrew James, but I can't remember) but hardly ever used it because it took so much planning - I seldom remembered to keep a bowl in the freezer "just in case", and resented the space the bowl always took if I did store one in the freezer.
I then bought myself a lovely lovely freeze-it-for-you machine and it is an utter game changer. As long as I have the basic ingredients available, I can be spontaneous and have ice cream ready in 10 minutes. It's this one, but I bought it for £8 from a charity sale a few years back (oh, how I miss those wonderful Sue Ryder sales at Nettlebed).2 -
I like it but don't use it that often for the same reason as you - the freezer space required for the bowl. Am emptying it out at the moment in anticipation of making more summer flavours.goldfinches said:

Although I'm happy with it I would much rather have CJ's one, for £8 that is a total bargain! No man is worth crawling on this earth.

@C_J I am in awe of the bargain you got there, I never got to those Nettlebed sales before they stopped but have always regretted not doing so.
Thankyou for the recommendation, I might try looking around to see if I can snap up a secondhand one.May No-Spend Days 3

@C_J - does your Magimix make ice-cream "whippy"? Although tasty and not cursed with icicles, my efforts have been dense. No man is worth crawling on this earth.

My vanilla ice-cream recipe was okay, but it used milk as well as cream and definitely tasted "milky" on thawing. I'd like to go for a creamier option next time, suggestions? Am working on liberating some freezer space to accommodate. No man is worth crawling on this earth.

After a bit of trial and error I realised that condensed milk and double cream (proportions a matter of personal choice) create a good base for an ice-cream.
I'm currently finishing off some peach melba ice-cream I made a while ago. Its crystal-y and icy even though I added vodka to the mixture and requires a bit of a thaw before eating. In retrospect I am struggling to see what my ice-cream maker adds of the traditional freeze and churn method. I was hoping to create soft scoop creations without the additves but I am nowhere near!

@Rosa_Damascena I use the Carnation ice-cream recipes as they are very easy and very tasty. I don't have an ice-cream maker and just pour mine into a Tupperware & plonk in the freezer.
The 2nd ex-husband bought an all-singing, all-dancing freezing SAGE model that had a number of options & could pause to allow ripple, nuts or fruit to be added part way through. When we split up & I liberated the freezer, there were 11 various sorbet or ice-creams in there!
