I'm afraid flying cheaply isn't really an option. Flights were literally disappearing as you tried to book them. The three flights and hotel will be in the region of £1000.
What I meant was that if there were 10 flights costing between £5 & £200 and instead someone popped for one costing £1k that excess amount wouldn't be considered reasonable and therefore not repaid, at least not fully.   If there was 1 flight costing £800 and another £850 they might consider them comparable.

It was Luton to Sibiu, Romania return. Yes not a hub airport and no Wizzair staff in sight.
In fact when we were disembarking I asked the Wizzair stewards about making a claim for my husband they had no idea that the plane was overbooked and 2 people on standby.
Luton is a base for Wizz UK, Sibiu is a base for Wizz Malta.

I believe Sibiu (which is the operating end) normally has a 186 seat A320, it's very possible that due to ATC restrictions this was pushed to a 180 seat version of the same model. I can see an aircraft (HA-LPL) was positioned in from another base at a similar time to ATC issues which is still there, which would back up this theory. Wizz Hungary and Wizz Malta very routinely lease aircraft to each other.

He will likely be entitled to the cost of the new flights but nothing else, however a push for compensation may be in order, however unlikely this may be to succeed.
