(I've tried to check whether this has been mentioned already, haven't found anything.)
Since this morning InYourArea, https://www.inyourarea.co.uk/promotion/national-trust , is open to register for a family day pass with NT. Have just done it, quick and easy.
You need to give an email address and will receive the pass as an email with a barcode. Just have it on the phone and you're good to go.
(Did another day pass about a month ago, very positive experience.)

Just to update this, I'm afraid you're too late now. Not surprisingly 100,000 went very quickly.

Wow.
Last time it was 250k passes, I believe, and I came to the party quite late but still got a pass. We loved the outing and are seriously thinking of buying membership, perhaps during winter.
