DIY Letters of Administration

Hi. Has anyone followed the DIY guide on MSE. If yes, how did you get on? My father in law passed away leaving amount of money in a saving account approx £72000. No will and he is a widow. No property, valuables, investments etc. I've been getting a few quotes off solicitors. Cheapest about £450+vat+ court fee for the Letters of administration. I've look at the guide and the form and it doesn't look to bad. Anyone have any advice or feedback on doing it themselves. Thanks. 🙂

Just for clarification is the money all in one account? Who is that account with? For that value I expect they would require letters of administration if in a single account but may be worthwhile approaching the savings institution to double check before you start the process?

If the estate is as straightforward as it sounds the definitely DIY.

It should be just as easy as doing probate with a will,  which is very straightforward,  just take your time and read the forms properly.
With just a savings account it couldn’t be simpler.
I did the probate for my late FiL in 2020.

Thanks. It's all with the one bank and there limit for probate etc is £50000. 🙂
  • Yes, definitely DIY. It's pretty much the same process as applying for probate, which is quite straightforward if it's a simple estate. I applied for probate for my late husband last year, only needed because he had a cash ISA above the bank's limit for probate.

There are restrictions concerning who can apply for Letters of Administration, so in your case it will need to be a child or grandchild of the person who has died.
  • Thanks all. Just a update. Done the application online and it took 10 days from submitting the application to getting the grant of Letters of Administratiin in my hand. Advice on website said it could take up to 16 weeks. So all good. 🙂
