Slides to chromebook

I used to have a small gadget that I put individual slides in, wait till it self focused, pressed a button and the slide was converted to photograph on my laptop and saved.
I've long since lost that gadget, however in the process of packing for an impending move, found more slides.
In newsfeed I've seen an app that somehow if you hold a slide over a blank white laptop screen, does much the same I think. Can anyone advise please.?
