Probate or not?

My husband died recently and did not leave a will. We don’t own our own home and the only asset he has is about £25000 in Barclays current account in his sole name. Will I have to deal with probate? Thank you.

Probably not but do contact Barclays bereavement team (not any other counter or phone staff). They can tell you what they require. Often they have some discretion in how much they will pay out so be clear you need probate for no other purposes.1

Barclay's limit is £50k, like many banks. Ask the bereavement team what documentation you need.If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing1

My mother had a similar amount with Barclays and they transferred it to me within two days of requesting it. I did make an appointment with my local branch and took in a copy of the death certificate, will and some ID for me. This was pre Covid, so probably best to start with a call to the bereavement team.

Just go onto Barclays website and find the bereavement section, you can sort it out online. You will be able to upload his death certificate and your ID straight onto their portal.
I dealt with Barclays for my FiL’s accounts in 2020.1 -
