Hi All,
Looking to get a new laptop for schoolwork/browsing/streaming.
I would prefer to buy new, budget is 250-300, Windows.
I was about to buy this one, but thought I'd check with the brainpower of MSE if you would recommend anything else?
Thanks!

I think "Windows S" is a pain, but maybe there's a workaround?

Windows S mode means that you can only install apps from the Windows store. It can easily be turned off to give "standard" Windows. But once done it can't be put back to S mode. However for a new laptop I would want more than the 4GB of RAM that is in that one, and probably a bigger drive than 128GB.(The Intel N6000 pocessor is also lower end).It looks adequate for general use, and schoolwork, and I realise that budget may be a consideration. To add a note of reality I use 2 laptops, one is 8 years old, one is 11 years old. Both have 4GB RAM, and of course old CPUs. Both are perfectly adequate for everday use, as long as you don't want to do multi-player online gamimg, heavy photo/video editing or similar.PS. Expect your daughter to pull a face whatever you get, it won't be right/what 'everyone else has'. ( But I'm sure you are used to that one already).0

I would recommend any of the HP range in your price range for a teenager. The Pavilion 15 comes highly recommended but may be just over your very sensible budget decision. But if you look at the full HP range online, you'll find what would be suitable. Lucky daughter----my Dad bought me the very best paper exercise books for A levels and Uni

Ask what school recommend as she may not need a full blown laptop.A tablet and keyboard may be more than adequate if they use online software. Its all my daughter has used for all of secondary school and she is now doing A levels.
School may also have access to discounts.1 -
I would be looking for a minimum of 8Gb RAM in any Windows laptop today. If the budget can't stretch I would look at a refurbished model from either Dell, HP or Lenovo.
If you do go with a base model with Windows S as recommended above, shift it to Windows Home and whilst doing so create a user level account for daily use with an admin account for any elevated privileges to make it more secure. Do the latter if you get one with full Windows installed.1 -
If you aren't wedded to it being Windows then a Chromebook may be a better option for schoolwork.PS. Have you asked your daughter? She may just surprise you with a sensible suggestion as to what she needs/wants.1

Really? The Smythson exercise books are £255 each and you say he bought multiple books for you.0
