Hi All

I run a small business and work as an Ebay reseller from home can anyone recommend an insurance company they use for this purpose, I do understand that you have to declare as a business with your insurance company otherwise you could have your insurance policy void.

So if anyone knows an insurance company for this that would be a great help kind regards

I would recommend going via a broker who deals with commercial as well as domestic insurance.  I can't remember who I use, but it is important that if you use separate companies for the contents and buildings that everyone knows that stock is involved.
There is no point trying to use price comaparison sites in my experience.  I spent a lot of time some years ago phoning insurance companies to try to get quotes, but it was only via brokers who know the best companies to approach that I got sensible quotes.

Could either of you give a name or two of any insurance companies that's best for this?

When I used the comparison sites there was a box to tick for clerical work only, would that fit?

  • If you don't have visitors (odd collection in a blue moon would be fine) as above I think clerical covers it. You could always call any of the standard companies and double check. :)

Or speak to a broker to see what they suggest.

Probably not because any stock is probably not covered. Maybe also an issue where the address is show on ebay?

It will come down to what you are actually doing at home... where are the items you are selling stored? Where are they sent from? Where do returns come to? If you are a drop shipper so all you do at home is sit in front of a PC then that is clerical work and most will be ok with it. If you have any of your business products in your home that moves you into a very different place.

It's also down to the nature of the items, if they are stored or processed at home.
High value items could increase the theft risk. Items containing batteries could increase the fire risk. Etc.
