It is not common no, especially if it were one of the petrol variants, however it it were one of the diesels, the engine had not warmed up and it had only been driven on short journeys then it is certainly possible. Did the garage say anything other than it was a fail, they would usually have an idea why? What were the figures on the emissions report?

Upon further investigation my mechanic he discovered that at the previous service the wrong engine oil was used pushing the emissions sky high.Following an oil change the car car past the retest 👍

I would be livid with whoever serviced it. If it was a main dealer I would be jumping up and down on them.
The damage the incorrect oil could cause.

I wouldn't think the type of oil would affect the emissions that much, would they even record what type of oil they put in?
Seats have a 60,000 or 3-year warranty, is it still under warranty?

I don't suppose you know the exact failure?

I'd guess HC too high if the oil was getting past the rings and being burnt, but it would be producing blue smoke and certainly using oil.

Seems remarkable that it would be fixed within minutes with an oil change though.

Quote ... I wouldn't think the type of oil would affect the emissions that much,

Unfortunately these days engine oil type is critical to engines
Gone are the days of Mobil or Gtx or Duckhams etc.  or any old oil will do

    Have a read here

Modern engines are totally different  many need low sulphur or  this that and the other
My Fiesta diesel needs a certain type of oil not just any old one

Correct one for turbo diesel without dpf filter .... there is a similar  but different w rating oil for one with dpf

Friend of mine used to work at a Mercedes dealership and had many cars having 1st mot fail on emissions
When owners were  questioned about servicing , owner was a bit vague about local garage being cheaper than main dealer for service

Wrong oil used ,  changed oil and filter  run for 20 minutes or so   then passed mot emissions

Can also depend on the garage and the scruples, or lack of.

I bought a brand new car in 1996, I took it to a Kwik Fit garage when it needed it's first MOT in 1999 (they had a cheap MOT offer) and the car failed and supposedly needed several hundred pounds of replacements due to corroded parts that they were shocked at due to the age. Decided instead to take it to a local mechanic for a retest and it passed (it needed a small pipe replacing for the cost of £16).

Maybe the OP's case is genuine, but the cynical part of me thinks it's just a way of boosting the price up by needing an unnecessary oil and filter change. Anyone remember the Watchdog investigation on some garages where they went for an oil and filter change and marked the filters and found that some were charging for replaced oil and filter without changing the filter (and probably the oil) .

The wrong oil can clog the dpf which would increase the emissions

I'm guessing it is petrol if it failed on emissions, diesels only have to pass a smoke test, a blocked dpf would push the smoke up though.
